What is OSR?
The acronym OSR stands for Old School Revival or Old School Renaissance (depending on who you ask), and for D&Dβor Dungeons & Dragonsβit means morphing the current set of rules to fit some of the earliest frameworks of the game from the ’80s.
Old School Style (Play)
People often express annoyance at the mention of exposition, but the context here is essential to understand the original ideas of the game and how to implement them now.
Older versions of D&D were very light on rules compared to the most recent 5th Edition version that was published in 2024, with most early tabletops placing heavy emphasis on creative problem-solving via commonly-shared house rules.
This style of play usually included the following aspects:
- high lethality,
- open world,
- lack of pre-written plot,
- rewards centered on exploration (treasure traded for XP),
- disregard for encounter balance, and
- random tables to generate elements of the world,
which enabled all players to aid in the creation of a uniquely-unfolding story.
Managing a D&D game, or acting as the Game/Dungeon Master, can become tiresome in an attempt to read all 364 pages of the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide, which houses important rules for running the game, creating encounters for adventures and campaigns, and distributing magic items that player characters can collect throughout their escapades.
And ultimately, we just want to play with our friends!
